Sacred Sites Are Living Places

There is an important difference between visiting a sacred site… and consuming one.
Many sacred places around the world have become destinations for travelers.
Respect Opens Unexpected Doors
Many sacred places around the world have become destinations for travelers. But sacred travel asks a deeper question: How do we enter these places respectfully?
Entering into a Relationship With a Place

Sacred sites often belong to living cultures. They carry traditions, stories, and spiritual meaning that existed long before visitors arrived. For the people who hold them sacred, these places are not simply historical landmarks or scenic locations. They are living spaces of reverence, memory, and connection.
Sacred travel invites us to approach these places differently.
In 2023, I was in Portugal with a group visiting an ancient stone circle. Most of the group walked directly inside the stones, but I stood quietly outside for a moment. I paused and asked the guardians of the stones if I could enter. I promised to do no harm and to respect the space.
A man I had only met a few days earlier on the trip noticed what I was doing and asked me about it. When I explained, he looked at me and said, “I’m in charge of the Druids in England, and I would be honored if you would join the Druids and me at Stonehenge for the summer solstice.”
That invitation led to one of the highlights of my life — an experience that began simply because I chose to approach the sacred site with respect.
Listening Before Taking
Respect can take many forms. It might mean dressing appropriately, observing silence, or choosing not to photograph certain spaces. It might mean learning the history of a place before visiting it, or recognizing that not every sacred site is meant to be treated as a tourist attraction.

Most importantly, it means approaching the land with humility rather than entitlement.
Travel More Deeply
The next time you visit a sacred place, pause before you enter. Learn its story. Listen to the land. Approach with humility rather than expectation. Sacred travel begins when we move beyond sightseeing and enter into a relationship with the places that call to us.
