Sometimes, our most cherished possessions are objects; sometimes, they are people. And sometimes, they are both.
On a trip to Egypt with my friends—Laurel, whom I met in Tibet in 2005, and Tim, who joined our journeys in Israel in 2018— sought out a rare stone known as Libyan gold tektite. This stone, formed by a meteorite impact 26 million years ago, was once found on the border between Libya and Egypt in the Sahara Desert. The ancient Egyptians, recognizing its cosmic significance, revered it as a favorite among Pharaohs and High Priests. The most famous example is the carved scarab beetle that adorns the center of Tutankhamun’s breastplate. Sadly, our search for this stone in Egypt came up empty.
However, while traveling in Portugal last year to study the Knights Templars, Laurel, Tim, and I met James, a proper Englishman and fellow pilgrim. One afternoon, before I entered an ancient stone circle, I performed my usual ritual—asking the guardians of the site for permission to enter. As I thanked the ancient ones, I noticed James watching me. He inquired about what I was doing, and after I explained my sacred site ritual, he revealed that he was one of the head Druids in England. To our delight, he invited us to join him at Stonehenge with the Druids for the next Summer Solstice.
We met in England, and on our way to Stonehenge, we made a stop in Glastonbury. There, in a small hidden jewelry shop, we stumbled upon the last four Libyan gold tektites, each set in a different style. We each purchased them and wore them during the three ceremonies of the summer solstice inside the sacred circle of Stonehenge.
The ring I bought has not left my finger since. It serves as a reminder not only of ancient journeys that connect me to our ancestors but also of the people who walked these paths with me and the memories we created together. The true value of this ring lies in the experiences and connections that have infused it with meaning.
