So often we label the rooms in our homes by what we do in them, the dining room, living room, the entertainment room, etc. Creating a meditation space gives you a place in your home or office that is dedicated to calm, silence, and stillness. Finding a moment of calm each day is important for our well-being and overall stress levels.
You don’t have to believe in Feng Shui to know that you are influenced by your surroundings. Setting aside a corner, or a specific area to practice meditation is a wonderful way to cultivate inner calm, stillness, and clarity.
Below are 7 suggestions on creating a meditation space:
- Find a space, a corner, closet, or even a section of the garden will do, just make sure the space feels good to you.
- Keep the area clean and uncluttered. Clutter around you will promote clutter in your mind.
- Select feel good objects that will fit the purpose of the space. Perhaps a cushion, blankets, or a pillow that will create a sense of softness.
- Add personal touches. This can be a sound, like bells or chimes, or crystals, stones, beads, or any form of artwork. Anything that brings you a peaceful sense of gratitude.
- Layer beautiful aromas from essential oils, aromatic candles, or incense such as lavender, chamomile, and peppermint, which can soothe the soul, mind, and body.
- Consider bringing nature into your space which studies show promotes healing. This will instantly promote harmony and balance. Choose a plant, a vase of fresh flowers, seashells, stones collected from hikes, or even a small water fountain.
- Although not necessary music can be relaxing for many people. This is particularly helpful to those who live in a busy city area where the sounds of traffic, trains or sirens are a constant.
Still your mind, erase all the worldly issues and open up to the healing powers of meditation.
