Three Depths and Kinds of Love

I believe every person we meet—and those we’ve yet to encounter—exists in our lives for a reason. Each connection brings with it a set of directions, guiding us to the next destination in our journey. As we move forward, we must carry the hope that each stop could be the final one, that perhaps the next person we meet won’t simply hand us directions but will instead offer us something lasting and beautiful—enough to inspire us to stay.

Among all these encounters, there are three profound kinds of love we experience, each serving a unique purpose in shaping who we are and how we understand love.

First Love
This love often finds us when we are young, wide-eyed, and unguarded. It’s tender and pure, though perhaps naive. Over time, we may drift apart or end things over what feels, in hindsight, like trivial matters. As we grow older, we might dismiss this love as fleeting or insignificant. But it wasn’t. It was love in the only way we understood it then. It taught us the beginnings of what love could be—its excitement, its simplicity, and its warmth.

Second Love
This is the love that challenges us to our core. It is often marked by heartbreak, pain, and lessons we never expected to learn. This love is turbulent—it brings betrayal, drama, and sometimes even loss. But through the struggle, we grow. We begin to understand the depths of our capacity to love and the boundaries we must set to protect ourselves. This love shows us what we value in relationships and what we must leave behind. It sharpens our clarity, makes us more cautious, and teaches us to recognize the difference between what nurtures us and what harms us.

Third Love
This love comes quietly, unexpectedly, and without pretense. It doesn’t arrive with grand gestures or a checklist of qualities; instead, it unfolds naturally, breaking down the walls we’ve built over time. You find yourself caring deeply without effort, drawn not to perfection but to the authenticity and beauty of another’s imperfections. This love feels like home. It allows you to be fully yourself—flaws and all—while inspiring you to be your best self. It’s the love that makes you believe in forever. It’s the kind of love you thank the universe for because it feels like destiny.

Each of these loves shapes us in ways we cannot always foresee. They teach us about ourselves, about what it means to give and receive love, and about the resilience of the human heart. And in the end, they guide us toward the love that feels most real, most true, and most enduring.

If I Could Speak to Myself Twenty Years Ago Today

Happy Birthday! You won’t believe what I see from this vantage point. The years are stretching before you like a long and winding road. Saddle up. I don’t want to scare you, but there is a forest up ahead. One that is dense and so dark, the sunlight won’t reach you for such a long time. You will wander lost, in the long and perilous night, not knowing if it will ever come to an end. But know the light will find you again, and when it does, you will never be afraid of the dark.

Somewhere between what you will survive and who you are becoming is exactly who you are supposed to be. Survival looks good on you so love the journey. Find comfort in the quiet corners of your wildest dreams.

Tomorrow you will wake up and still be enough. You’re fine, and when they want you to be bigger, faster, happier, don’t listen. This world doesn’t need a new you. It needs you. Don’t blend in. Do every last thing that feels right, and do it all your way, in your time.

You’re so beautifully flawed.

Speak with brutal honesty. People will love you in bits and pieces and hate you just the same. You’ll always be too much for some and not enough for others. There’s magic in you that most others can’t believe in, simply because they haven’t made sense of themselves. But you’re magic, still. You’ve been that way all along. And even if the world changes everything in you, this much will always be true.

Stand up for yourself. Grab your demons by the throat, and choke the life out of them.
Push through pain so you can absorb more love.
Never take a meal, a moment, or a tear for granted.
Leave the best part of yourself with everyone you touch.

See that turn ahead? That’s the place where love is waiting, with arms so warm it will melt away the winter in an instant. And then it will be summer for a very long time.

The Circle is Unbroken

When was the last time you did something for the first time? I’m doing something each month I’ve never done before to honor that I am alive. Today I joined other humans since the Neolithic and practiced the ancient art of tattooing. I got a small circle tattoo.

My mother died a week ago today and I realized I never could have done this if she was still alive. She would have said, “Sugar, what’s next, wearing white after Labor Day, paper napkins? Are you buying a motorcycle and wearing leather?” Too late Mother. Well, I don’t wear white after Labor Day, for god sake, I’m not a savage. So, Mother, this one’s for you.

I chose the circle because of my boys, who also got circle tattoos. Years ago for my birthday they wrote the attached poem and gave me the pave diamond necklace I wear almost daily.

THE CIRCLE

One of humankind’s oldest symbols,
first seen in the eye or the moon, and quickly transcribed on cave walls as an attempt to
communicate,
to bridge the gap between consciousness.
Then throughout history,
finding new shapes for the circle –
a halo, a marriage ring, a prayer wheel, Ouroboros –
yet always symbolizing the same thing;
the never-ending, Inclusion, wholeness, a cycle, infinity.
YOU ARE OUR CIRCLE
Always bridging our consciousness with your never-ending love
and inclusion;
always filling us and making us feel whole.
The circle, an infinite cycle, the love we always share.

Patience and Love

In my Feng shui practice, love is the number one reason a person calls me. If I arrive at the appointment and my client tells me that they have tried everything, then I share a story that my father used to tell me.

Patience and Love agreed to meet at a set time and place, beneath the 55th tree in the olive orchard. Patience arrived promptly and waited. He checked his watch, but still, there was no sign of love.

Was it the 88th tree or the 55th tree? He wondered and decided to check, just in case. As he made his way over to the 88th tree Love arrived at the 55th tree where Patience was noticeably absent.

Love waited and waited before deciding she must have the wrong tree and perhaps it was somewhere else they were supposed to meet.

Meanwhile, Patience had arrived at the 88th tree where Love was nowhere to be seen. Both began to drift aimlessly around the olive orchard, almost meeting, but they never do.

Finally, Patience who was lost and feeling quite resigned found himself beneath the same tree where he began. He stood there for barely a minute when there was a tap on his shoulder. It was Love.

“Where have you been?” he asked. “I have been searching for you for such a long time.” Love replied, “Stop looking for me. I will always find you.”

Healing the Spirits Immune System

Health and well-being are different, but each has its own ‘immune system’. While the body develops many kinds of diseases the spirit suffers from many forms of dis – ease. However, all dis – eases of the spirit have one cause. While the body can heal itself ‘naturally’, the soul needs to heal itself ‘consciously’ by becoming more aware. Only ‘realization’ can generate the transformation that heals the spirit.

The immune system needs four things to function properly – food, water, exercise, and rest. The signs your immune system isn’t working properly is you get sick – or if it is comprised you get the flu or some of us with a comprised immune system get cancer.

Signs your spirit’s immune system is comprised can range from a quiet feeling of uneasiness at one end of the spectrum to states of extreme stress that might include anything from deep sorrow to utter range to abject terror.

4 ways to heal our spirit’s immune system So, how do we heal our spirit’s immune system?

Here are four tips on how to heal your spirit’s immune system:

Develop a practice of visualization or meditation. There are so many apps now you can download and make stillness part of your daily routine.
Release Old Stories and Heal Wounds. This can be accomplished through traditional therapy or through energy modalities like Reiki energy healing or reflexology or acupuncture.
Practice Self Care. Give yourself permission to go get that massage or take an extra-long soothing bath or go on the trip.
Have a practice of love. When we practice loving people who are hard to love, forgiving people who have hurt us, or serving others who are less fortunate … then we are learning advanced techniques of love. The goal is to practice love with such dedication that we move past the point of having to think about it, to just do it automatically.
