Getting rid of clutter is a foundational principle of Feng Shui. Clutter creates stagnant energy and becomes an obstacle to any flow of chi in your space. Form defines energy. Clutter represents a chaotic form, thus chaotic energy. When clutter is removed, additional space is created. 

A genius of the last century, Nicholas Tesla once said, “There is an abundance of energy in space.” What an understatement! The less clutter you have, the more space you have, and the better flow of energy you have to activate all the power sections of your space.

Feng Shui elements rule every corner of your home or office and the five element theory is at the very heart of Feng Shui. The chi energy in any direction is ruled by the five elements; fire, wood, metal, earth, and water. We all use these elements to manifest opportunities and smooth out any obstacles.

This room is the perfect example of the earth element which brings nourishment, stability, and protection to this home. Our modern lifestyles promote disconnection from nature and produce a hectic and vastly artificial way of life. A strong earth element in your space will bring you back to your own center, calm and reassure you and help to provide support for all your endeavors.

GrandfatherMy great great grandfather was 12 when his family was murdered in Ireland. He stowed away on a ship and landed in New Orleans. He later became a judge and bought this house on St. Charles Ave.

I have always loved this room. Doesn’t it feel good? That’s because it’s balanced. The mirror over the fireplace represents water which balances the fire. The credenza represents wood, flowers on the table brings in the earth element, and all the white is metal or air. All of this air is perfect for a living room that wants to encourage conversations, including the couches that face each other, which will balance any dialogue between anyone who sits on them. How does your living room feel?

Bring Balance into Your Bedroom Using the Five Elements of Feng Shui

I find that balance seems to be the key to almost everything. From the foods we eat, the clothes we wear and the lifestyles we choose, and your home is no different. Feng Shui strives to create a space that allows more chi or energy to flow naturally. One way to achieve this is by filling your home with the balance of the five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

This photo only has ONE element – metal, represented in all the white and grey. It is missing WOOD which promotes vibrant health; FIRE which increases our energy levels, fuels passion and fosters creativity; EARTH which helps to generate knowledge and stability; and WATER which is all about fluidity, emotional depth, and abundance.

The bedroom, no matter where it is located in your home, always represents your love life. If you are yearning for more passion – add the fire element to your room by adding red. If you need some stability, add the earth element by bringing in house plants. If you are wanting to grow your relationship bring in raw wooden shelves or the color brown. And if you want more of an emotional connection to your partner, bring in a fountain or the colors black or blue.

create a designated spiritual space in your homeOur homes are a reflection of our spirit. That’s why I’m shocked at how many homes I see where the people have decorated each room to a tee, but haven’t designated a single spot in the home to only their spirit. A sacred space may not appear on traditional blueprints, but having a place where you can go to connect with yourself and is as crucial as any other room in your home.

If free space in your home is limited, get creative. Search for corners of your house that aren’t being used. Add a box full of meaningful objects to this area. It doesn’t matter if it’s crystals, feathers or shells the energy of love will explode out of the box each time you open it. Make sure the five elements are present to balance the space. This sacred corner has the element of fire in the lamp and the sunlight that shines in; metal in the wall and furniture color; wood in the table and box; earth in the flowers; and water on the color of the Moroccan table. The painting holds all the elements in the colors.

Having a designated space in your home for prayer, meditation, or private reflection can be a constant reminder of how important it is to cultivate this sense of awe and wonder in your life.
