After melanoma skin cancer, and my last facial reconstruction surgery, I promised myself that from now on I was going to live my life by a compass, not a clock. And I made a list of all the places I wanted to experience. Now, almost seven years later, I am almost at the bottom of that list and just returned from a place that was always at the top, Egypt.
The three-week adventure was pure magic. One of my favorite places was in Southern Egypt, the Temple of Isis.
Isis was the Egyptian goddess of love, among other things. So, Isis got me thinking about love, and I don’t mean just any kind of love. I mean the kind of love that allows you to feel safe enough to be vulnerable.
Have you ever known a love so profound that it transcends reason, distance, and time? A love so profound that you are convinced, it was destined before you existed. A love that crawls beneath your skin and into your soul? Or devours you whole and makes sense of your bones? When you find that beautiful depth with someone nothing else will ever do. Nothing else will ever be good enough. Because when you have been awakened to the fact that mere moments in the abyss hold more intimacy than years on the surface – well there’s no going back to sleep.
That’s the mythology of love that Isis shared and that’s why we’re still talking about her 4000 years later.
